Supporting Medical Research
The ALDS supports medical research in three ways:
-
Direct funding of medical research: investigating
either treatments or cures for Leukodystrophy. Currently there is minimal
research in this field in Australia.
- Education : we aim to increase the understanding of health professionals about leukodystrophy by providing opportunities for international experts in different aspects of leukodystrophy to travel to Australia to speak at our conferences and seminars and meet with doctors. Members of the ALDS also help educate medical and genetic students about leukodystrophy as part of their university training.
- Collaboration : when medical institutions are conducting surveys on topics to do with leukodystrophy we advise our members through our newsletter or we may provide details of interested patients for medical surveys. (Note; personal information such as contact details are only provided when members have given the ALDS permission to be contacted about such things and then only in discussion with the ALDS member.)
